... Lübeck's museum for 19th-century and classical modern art. The important collection of paintings, sculptures, and graphic art includes works by German and European artists and focuses on Romanticism and early 20th-century art. Works by Caspar David Friedrich, Johann Friedrich Overbeck, Max Liebermann, Gotthardt Kuehl, Edvard Munch, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Albert Aereboe, Lyonel Feininger, and Max Beckmann, among others, are on display.
The Behnhaus was not built as a museum. It is a neoclassical city palace, a private residence built in its present form around 1800. The combination of the art collection and the historic building has played an important role since the museum's very beginnings. This also becomes apparent during the current exhibition tour.
